MUSIC CUP FAQ

Alles, was du vor deinem ersten Songturnier wissen musst.

What is MUSIC CUP?

MUSIC CUP is a browser-based Song World Cup for deciding which track from an artist matters most to you. Instead of forcing you to rank an entire discography in one overwhelming list, it gives you one understandable choice at a time: choose the song you would rather keep. Every winner advances through the bracket until one personal champion remains. The result is not an algorithmic verdict about the best song for everyone; it is a record of your own listening choices, favorite eras, and surprising upsets.

How does a song tournament work?

Start by searching for an artist, then choose the kind of Song World Cup you want to play. Top Hits creates a recognizable field from available popular songs, Random Picks shuffles the catalog for less predictable matchups, and Pick Your Own lets you select every candidate yourself. Once the field is set, MUSIC CUP presents head-to-head duels. Pick the track you prefer in each duel, let it advance, and continue through the bracket until the final produces one champion.

Where do the songs and previews come from?

Artist search, track information, artwork, and available preview data come from Apple's music catalog. Availability can differ by artist, release, country, and regional licensing, so a MUSIC CUP reflects the songs that can be loaded for your current session rather than claiming to be a permanent discography database. If an artist returns too few eligible songs, try another spelling, a different artist entry, or an artist with a broader released catalog. Available previews can help when you need a quick reminder before making a close call.

Which artists work best in MUSIC CUP?

Any artist with at least four available tracks can make a useful MUSIC CUP, because four songs are enough for a small knockout bracket. Artists with bigger catalogs are especially fun because you can ask more than one question: best-known single, favorite deep cut, best opening track, best album closer, or best song from a particular era. Start with a recognizable artist for a quick first game, then return to the same artist with random or custom selection when you want a different answer. The best cups usually begin with a question you genuinely want to settle.

Can I use deep cuts or songs from one album?

Yes. Pick Your Own is designed for focused music debates, not only an artist's biggest singles. Choose the exact album tracks, B-sides, collaborations, soundtrack songs, live favorites, or personal deep cuts that belong in your version of the tournament. You can make a cup around one album, one creative period, a set of fan favorites, or songs you associate with a specific moment. Once you have selected the field, those songs enter a direct knockout bracket, so fame never decides the winner for you.

What is the difference between Top Hits and Random Picks?

Top Hits starts from the artist's most recognizable available songs. It is the quickest mode when you want a familiar bracket, are settling a classic favorite-song debate, or are introducing someone to an artist's catalogue. Random Picks changes the candidates, not your judgment: it shuffles available tracks before the cup begins, creating new head-to-head matchups and giving overlooked album cuts a chance to beat a huge single. Use Top Hits for the obvious question and Random Picks when the obvious answer feels too predictable.

Do I need to know every song before I start?

No. MUSIC CUP works precisely because it reduces a huge catalogue to two songs at a time. Make a quick instinctive choice when you know both tracks, or use an available preview when a title needs a reminder. You do not need music theory, streaming statistics, or complete knowledge of every album to play. A close matchup is part of the point: the bracket reveals what you reach for when you have to choose, while later rounds give stronger songs a chance to prove themselves again.

Can friends compare their champions?

Yes. A Song World Cup is an easy shared game because friends can start with the same artist, mode, and field size, then make every decision independently. For a fair comparison, agree on the starting conditions first: use Top Hits for a broad mainstream question, Random Picks for a discovery challenge, or Pick Your Own when everyone wants the same candidates. Comparing final champions, early eliminations, and unexpected upsets makes a vague favorite-song debate much more interesting. Two people can agree on every obvious hit and still reach very different winners.

What should I try after finishing a cup?

Treat the first result as a starting point, not a permanent answer. Run the same artist with another mode, build a smaller custom field around semifinalists, or create a new theme such as best ballad, best opener, favorite song for a road trip, or one album against another. A Top Hits champion, Random Picks champion, and album-only champion can all be different because they answer different questions. Replaying is also a useful way to discover whether a surprising winner can defend its title against a new draw.
